Curry may Cure the Common Cold and Flu
It may sound like another home remedy, but curry really is a great way to attack the common cold and flu, says research.
The Common Cold Centre at the University of Cardiff in the UK has tested numerous therapies over the past 10 years. They believe that conventional medicines provide only relief from symptoms and do not work against the virus or help our immune system to fight off the infection. Moreover, the center feels that there is evidence that some alternative medicines such as Echinacea, zinc, antioxidants and antivirals may help prevent the onset of common cold symptoms or shorten the duration of symptoms.
The centers’ head, Professor Ron Eccles, states “I recommend a hot spicy curry – it ensures you salivate and reduces your coughing and sore throat symptoms. “
Eccles further says that, “there are numerous spices that have antiviral properties which can be very beneficial for the treatment of the common cold and flu.”
“As well, hot fruit cordial drinks have an immediate effect on sore throats and other symptoms of the common cold and flu.”
Curry Powder Health Benefits
Curry powder is based largely on four spices: cumin, coriander, fenugreek and turmeric.
Some curry powders include other ingredients such as cloves, fennel, ginger, red pepper, chilies, cardamom, anise and garlic.
Fenugreek: This spice is praised as the “fix-all elixir” thanks to its potent antiviral properties. Studies have shown that it may rid the body of viruses that cause congestion and cold symptoms like a sore throat. Fenugreek is said to give immediate and sustained relief from symptoms such as cough, sore throat, sneezing, tiredness and a runny nose.
Turmeric: This spice is what gives curry its beautiful deep yellow color. Rich in antioxidants, turmeric has long been utilized as a medicinal in India. For a cold or the flu, the spice acts as a decongestant by increasing nasal discharge. Turmeric is also rich in antiseptic properties.
As of late, studies have revealed that it may fight cancer. Moreover, turmeric contains inflammation-fighting compounds called curcuminoids. Current research shows that curcuminoids may help prevent joint inflammation, carpal tunnel syndrome and Alzheimer’s. Studies also found that this amazing spice may lower cholesterol, improve liver function, protect cardiovascular system, improve certain eye conditions, reduce the risk of childhood leukemia and repair skin infections when used topically.
Cumin: A spice that has been used since ancient times. Seeds excavated in India have been dated to the second millennium BC. There are also been reports from numerous Egyptian Empire (between 16th century BC and 11th century BC), archaeological sites.
Whole and ground seeds are used in cuisines of various different cultures. As well, cumin is used as a medicinal plant to treat various ailments such as anemia, assist with digestive disorders, prevention of cancer, regulate blood sugar and cure the common cold. Black cumin (nigella sativa) is said to help reduce inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
This amazing spice is high in vitamin C and is claimed to help with various cold and flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, fatigue, aches and pains, excess phylum and difficulty sleeping.
A tea made with Cumin Seed and turmeric is great for congestion, coughs and helping the body fight against infection. As well, the tea is an effective gargle for sore throats.
Coriander: Also known as Chinese parsley, this spice is native to regions spanning from southwestern Asia and southern Europe to North Africa. Just so you know, coriander is the seed of the plant, cilantro or Chinese parsley is the plant itself. Coriander has various medicinal properties. Today in India and China, the seeds are used to break a fever and promote sweating. It is also said to promote sleep, help to relieve headaches (mainly those caused by a cold or flu) and restore a loss of appetite.
This multifaceted spice is said to be good for skin inflammation, skin disorders (antiseptic and antifungal), prevent seasonal allergies and hay fever, lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, prevent vision disorders like macular degeneration and protect the nervous system from damage.
In ancient Chinese, Coriander is used for longevity, immortality and as an aphrodisiac. Today, the seeds are used to promote sweating and break a fever, to stimulate the appetite and to draw out the rash in infections like the measles and chicken pox.
Hot Spices: Hot spices such as chilies and red peppers can be very beneficial for the common cold and flu.
The ‘heat’ acts as a decongestant and helps you sweat the cold out faster; making it easier to breathe.
Hot spices are also a high source of vitamin C which can help prevent and combat the common cold. A tasty hot curry lentil soup will help you recover a lot faster.
