Best Heirloom Seeds and Organic Seed Companies
I hate to tell you this, but just because a product is labeled Heirloom seed does not mean it’s organic or non GMO. If you want to save our seed supply and plant seeds that you can trust, it requires a bit of research and tenacity! You can’t be too careful!
A Word about GMO’s
Did you know that Monsanto now owns a stunning 90% of the conventional seed market in the US? This percent includes organic and heirloom seed!
Over the past few years companies like Monsanto has been aggressively buying seed companies including organic and heirloom companies. In fact, it is really difficult to avoid them.
Personally, I have been fighting to keep GMO products out of our food supply for about 20 years. Yes, I have spent many hours handing out literature and educating people on the dangers of GMO’s and our seed supply. Since I have been a strong advocate of ‘the right to know’ and have done years of research, I thought I would post an article on the best places to buy non-GMO seed.

Where to Buy Organic and Heirloom Seeds
Organic seed companies that are reliable today may not be tomorrow. Just stay aware and always keep updated.
Here is a list that should help you decide where to buy your organic and heirloom seeds.
Located in Mansfield, MO and established in 1932, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds has over 1800 varieties of heirloom seeds, all non-GMO.
As well, all their seed is non-hybrid, non-treated and non-patented.

Established in 1995 in Broomfield CO, Botanical Interests offers over 600 high quality, untreated, non-GMO varieties of seeds.
The company’s seed packets are also very helpful. Each packet includes a fabulous picture, detail instructions, best growing conditions and much more.
High Mowing Organic Seeds opened its doors in 1996 with only 28 varieties in the back yard of Tom Stearns residence in Wolcott, VT. By 2001, business had grown to such a magnitude that Tom had to contract with other local farms to grow seed. As well, Tom continued to produce seed himself on High Mowing’s own 5 acres.
Today the 40 acre farm grows most of the varieties that they sell. Their seeds are 100% certified organic and verified non-GMO. In truth, they have never sold genetically modified (GM) seeds. Moreover, they continue to develop standards that will shape the future of segregation, testing and traceability practices for seeds.

The heart of the Seed Library is our small farm in Accord, New York, located in the scenic Rondout Valley between the Catskill Mountains and the Shawangunk Ridge. The company has only used organic practices on the farm, and it became Certified Organic in May, 2013.
Most of their seed is produced on their small farm, the rest of their seeds are from other local farmers and from trustworthy wholesale seed houses that are not owned by or affiliated with multi-national biotech companies.
Hudson Valley Seed Library offers heirloom and open-pollinated seeds for vegetable, flower, and herb varieties. Additionally, they are a Certified Organic farm and a Certified Organic Handler (both by NOFA-NY LLC).
In 1985, Lake Valley Seed was born in a garage in their Boulder, Colorado community. Today, they are a national, full line garden seed company that continues to support local, independent retail stores in empowering gardeners within their communities.

Victory Seed Company
Around 1907, Victor Hugo Dunton establishes a farm located in Molalla, Oregon, on the 15 acres his father sectioned off for him when he “came of age.” The Dunton family has a rich story interleaved with farm, family and local histories. Today the company offers a wide variety of rare heirloom and open-pollinated vegetable, heirloom herbs and heirloom flower seeds. Moreover, the Victory Seed Company grows only non-hybrid and non-GMO plants. Unlike the majority of seed companies, they grow seeds on their own farm and supports small seed farmers by buying what they don’t grow from their network of growers.

Based out of Willits CA, Bountiful Gardens is a project of Ecology Action, a not-for-profit dedicated to ending world hunger by teaching sustainable agriculture.
Ecology Action works has projects all over the world that are locally staffed and locally adapted.
The company started over 30 years ago and only sells untreated, open-pollinated, non-GMO seed of heirloom quality for vegetables, herbs, flowers, grains, green manures, compost and carbon crops.
Established in 1977 in the Pacific NW, this company specializes in seeds for short seasons and cool climates. The company has reasonable prices and their seeds are untreated as well as non-GMO. Ed Hume Seeds has an amazing array of unique seeds for your flower beds and vegetable garden.
Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply originated in 1976 in Nevada City, California. The founder of PVFGS sold the business in 1989. Because of its increase in popularity, the business moved another 2 times, within the same area. . Eric and Patricia Boudier acquired the business in July of 1996. The company’s main headquarters is now based in Grass Valley, CA. PVFGS offers a wide selection of supplies, tools, equipment and goods to organic gardeners and farmers. Their seed line includes 300+ Certified Organic Vegetable Seeds, 90+ Open Pollinated Wildflower Seeds and 32 Organic Herb Seeds. All of their seeds are non-GMO.
The Territorial Seed Company originated in Cottage Grove, OR. The company’s first seed catalog was written in the fall of 1979.
However, it was purchased in 1985 from its founder Steve Solomon by Tom and Julie Johns. Since then the business has grown substantially.
The company’s seed saving techniques range from the newest processors to natural fermentation.
Today they grow close to 20% of the seed they offer, especially lettuces, squash, cucumbers and tomatoes. Territorial has also taken the Safe Seed Pledge and they support agricultural progress that encourages healthier soil and genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems. Territorial only offers untreated seed.
Southern Exposure Seed Exchange is located in the rolling hills of central Virginia, between Richmond and Charlottesville in Mineral. They have s 72-acre farm that has goats, chickens, hay fields, an herb garden, and extensive vegetable gardens for seed production, trialing, and eating. Generally they try to have an open house least once a year. However, they do not have a storefront and are not open to the public on a day-to-day basis.
The company offers many unusual Southern heirlooms such as peanuts, southern peas, corns for roasting and meal, turnip greens, collards, okra, naturally colored cotton, roselle and butter-beans. The company does not sell chemically treated or GMO seeds. Southern Exposure Seed Exchange has the Safe Seed Pledge.
This company is based out of Foxboro, Ontario. They offer over 100 varieties of heirloom tomato seeds as well as other popular vegetables, herbs and flowers. All their seeds are organically grown, open-pollinated and are mostly heirloom varieties. Additionally, Terra Edibles has the Safe Seed Pledge.
Salt Spring Seeds is located on Salt Spring Island, BC and has been in the safe and sustainable, local agriculture business for 28 years. All their seeds are untreated, open-pollinated and non-GMO. In fact, they grow all their own seeds and sell only their most recent harvest. Their catalogue is comprised of seeds from ten gardens and farms. All seeds are organically grown but only two farms officially carry the organic seal. Moreover, all seeds that are listed as certified organic are grown by Stowel Lake Farm on Salt Spring Island. Salt Spring Seeds has a huge variety of seeds, from vegetable to numerous grains and more.
The Cottage Gardener has been a Certified Organic processor and producer since 2006. They are located in Newtonville ON. They carry only open-pollinated seeds and do not carry modern hybrids or GMO seeds. Their seed house and plant nursery in southern Ontario contains over 700 heirloom seed varieties and are available in retail packet and bulk sizes. They also sell certified organic plants onsite every spring. In addition, they ship in both Canada and the US.
